The indictment that has now been served essentially sets out the following facts:
On July 23, 2017, Vietnamese national Trinh Xuan Thanh and his companion were forcibly dragged into a bus on the street in Berlin as part of Vietnam’s secret service operation and then brought back to Vietnam against his will. The kidnapping was carried out by employees of the Vietnamese secret service and officials of the Vietnamese Embassy in Berlin, as well as a number of Vietnamese citizens living in Europe, including Le Anh Tu who participated in the campaign and track the victims in advance.
Mr. Tu also participated and acted as a driver for those deployed in the kidnapping operation.
The defendant was arrested in Prague, Czech Republic on April 15, 2022, and extradited to detention in Germany on June 1, 2022.
The kidnapping of Mr. Trinh Xuan Thanh took place during the tenure of the Vietnamese Ambassador to Germany Doan Xuan Hung, up to this point, until the term of Ambassador Vu Quang Minh, the German, Czech and Slovak sides were investigating and expanding investigation, bringing the second character, Mr. Le Anh Tu, to trial.
