Six years after the kidnapping of Trinh Xuan Thanh from Berlin through Bratislava to Hanoi, the German police are investigating another political case. This news story is about a high-ranking Vietnamese businesswoman who fled abroad. A Vietnamese journalist spoke to RTVS privately about the incident.

Former General Director of AIC Group Nguyen Thi Thanh Nhan was one of the 50 most powerful women in Vietnam according to Forbes magazine. And since she is also very close to incumbent Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, she has clearly been warned that a mock trial is coming to charge her with corruption and violations of public procurement rules. An arrest warrant was issued for her in May last year, but she was already overseas at that time. Berlin-based Vietnamese-born journalist Le Trung Khoa was the first to report that Nguyen Thi Thanh Nhan is living in Germany and denies all allegations. According to sources, it is an internal dispute between PM Chinh, CPV’s General Secretary [Nguyen Phu Trong] and Minister of Public Security [To Lam].

Le Trung Khoa, a Vietnamese journalist, said:

“According to my information, Nguyen Thi Thanh Nhan is living in a large German city and also seems to be under police protection. Because she held a key position leading an arms trading company for many years, she had a lot of secret information, not just about the Vietnamese military but also about their foreign business partners.”

According to Mr. Le Trung Khoa, AIC conducted arms deals worth billions of dollars annually. The arms trade activities of the Vietnamese military are also described in a secret document held by the journalist.

Mr. Le Trung Khoa continued:

“This secret 10-page document is important because it details several arms deals and cooperation with foreign intelligence agencies. The document includes several images of negotiations in the United Arab Emirates and mentions arms deals with Israel, Russia and China, among others.”

There is information that the Vietnamese secret service is trying to bring her back to Vietnam illegally, as in the case of Trinh Xuan Thanh abduction.

If Nguyen Thi Thanh Nhan starts talking about arms deals in Vietnam, it could have unpleasant consequences for corrupt foreign businessmen who got contracts in Hanoi.

Journalist Le Trung Khoa gave an interview to Slovak State Radio and Television Station (RTVS) on August 4, 2023 about Nguyen Thi Thanh Nhan’s escape to Germany.
