Vietnam urges Beijing to deal with China-related loss-making projects

The plane carrying Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and the Vietnamese delegation landed at Andrews military airport in Washington, USA.

In a phone call on September 20, Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh urged his Chinese counterpart Li Keqiang to resolve issues in projects carried out by Chinese contractors in Vietnam and with loans from China. State media reported on the same day.

These are the expansion projects of Thai Nguyen Iron and Steel Plant Phase II, Ninh Binh Fertilizer Plant, and Ha Bac Nitrogenous Fertilizer Factory. These are projects in the list of 12 loss-making and inefficient projects with investment capital of trillions of Vietnamese dong.

Also in this phone conversation, the Vietnamese side asked China to create favorable conditions for Vietnamese goods to be exported across the border in the situation that China increased border control because of the spread of the COVID-19 epidemic in the northern country.

The two sides also discussed disagreements between the two countries regarding the land border and the South China Sea (Vietnam calls it the East Sea).

According to state media, PM Chinh suggested that the two sides continue to well implement 3 legal documents on the land border between Vietnam and China; jointly make efforts to maintain peace, and stability, and properly handle maritime issues in the spirit of high-level common sense, “Agreement on basic principles guiding the settlement of maritime issues between Vietnam and China,” accelerate negotiations at sea; settle disputes and disagreements by peaceful means, in accordance with international law, especially the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS 1982).
